Fishing near Island Falls

A buddy of mine, Kevin, who is in the millitary was home for the week from Germany, so My family spent a few days with his up at their family time share in Island Falls.
I arrived Wednesday Morning, and it was right off to find a trout stream. After a moderate drive, and very wet muddy bushwack we made it to the stream

Kevin quickly got in the prime spot and started throwing a silver Rapala.

His Bass Fishing brother lagged behind lugging all his tackle

I tried fishing from shore, then decided to bite the bullet and wet wade out into the muddy bottom

The brookies turned out to be cooperative

Most of the fish were in the 8-9 inch range, but near then end of the day my friend got two nice one by tying on a wooley bugger, with a bobber and letting it sit on bottom. I was able to get into the fish preaty good by wet wading, but I paid for it later. I had to pull 2 leeches off my feet, and somewhere along the way I lost a toenail!!!

Next day we decide to try the mattawankeag Lake for bass. We spent the day out there but never did find any. We did find a lot of pickeral, and I lost a lot of flies to them!! We also got into some huge white perch. We kept a few and brought them back to deep fry. They were excellent!!!!!

Small Stream Brookies

I went out for a few hours this am and bushwacket into a spot on a local trout stream. I forgat my bug spray and the mosquitos were awful!!!!!.
The first few spots I hit were just full of chubs. I came to a deeper pool and finally hooked into a couple trout.

I then saw and heard a rise accross the pool. I put on a dry, cast over it several times, but had no luck. As I saw the fish come up a few more times, it appeared he was actually hitting minnows just below the surface. I put on a streamer.

I fished a little while longer with no luck

A pond in Katahdin Iron Works

I headed out the door about 4:40 this morning. I decided to randomly pick a pond up in K.I. and hit it. I hit the gate right at 6am and headed to the pond. The pond has a short walk in, and it took me a while to find the trail, so it was a little after 7 when I finally reached shore.

There were a bunch of boat stashed on shore, so I took that as a good sign.

It was very windy, and I blew around the pond in my float tube alot!!! After a couple hours I still hadn't caught any fish. I decided to go to shore and stretch my legs. I was kicking through a shallow weedy cove and casting as I went, when I finally got a fish.

I kept getting fish right in the clumps of lily pads.

I would like to say I caught some lunkers, but 8 1/2 inches was preaty much the max. Even so, it turned out to be another great day in the Maine woods!!!!!I also has the bonus of seeing several moose and deer, plus I did some recon on some other ponds so I wont have to waste time trying to find the trail next time!!!!!!!

Congradulations Brandon!!!!

The Smallest of Brooks

I got up at 4 this am to head to a trout pond I haven't fished in about 17 years. I got out in my float tube, but the wind was blowing me all over the place. Fished for a couple hours with no luck. As I was driving home I saw on the map where a little brook passed near the road. I stopped to check it out. It was a very small brook, but it had one little hole that was full of trout that scattered as soon as they saw me. I went back to the truck and grabbed my 2 wt. As I got near the water I hit behind a stump and cast out a small caddis dry. The trout were all over it. The real challenge was trying to get them in without tangling. I got over a dozen little guys between 5 and 8 inches.

Baxter Park Camping

I took my wife and daughter on our first camping trip of the year this past Friday and Saturday up to BSP.
We arrived about 3pm Friday and I asked my daughter what she wanted to do, Unfortunately she said Hiking.

When we got back we fished the stream for a couple hours and caught some little trout until the bugs drove us off.

The next morning I got up about 5:15, grabbed my float tube, and hiked into a pond a friend had told me about. Water had a mirror surface, and I had it to myself. Once I found the fish, I had one on about every other cast. Most were small, but a couple decent ones mixed in (biggest about 13 1/2)

After I got back, we decided to take my daughter to abol pond beach to play on the beach and have lunch. Stupid me, I took my tube out before we went, so of course there were fish rising the whole time just out of casting reach.

I stopped at slide dam on the way back to camp and the girls caught some trout.

Unfortunately it started raining hard that evening so all our stuff got wet and we had to head home sat night in stead of sunday

Long Pond

Got on the water at 5:30 Friday Morning. It was very windy, rainy and cold. Fished till about 10. I only got 1 trout, nothing very big on a streamer. I did find some little dimples on the surafce in a sheltered cove, so I paddled over any threw on a dry fly. I then proceded to land about 10 or so sunfish!!!!
